Dr. Vasantha K. Kanukuntla earned her Doctor of Optometry (OD) and Master’s in Vision Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Optometry, graduating with Beta Sigma Kappa honors. She gained extensive clinical experience through rotations at Alabama Ophthalmology Associates, Retina Consultants of Alabama, Simon Williamson Clinic, and Kleiman Evangelista Eye Center, with advanced training in injections, minor surgical procedures, ophthalmic lasers, and Basic Life Support (BLS).
Dr. Kanukuntla has specialized expertise in NeuroVisual Medicine which is the optometric subspecialty that identifies and treats Binocular vision dysfunction and neurological / medical symptoms that originate directly or indirectly in the visual system which include headache, dizziness, anxiety and panic, persistent post-concussive symptoms, migraines, gait instability and balance problems, frequent falls, neck pain, motion sickness, nausea, and reading and learning problems. She uses advanced non-surgical techniques, including prism therapy and vision rehabilitation, to treat patients with visual symptoms affecting their daily lives.
Her professional experience includes several years at Pediatric Eye Specialists in Fort Worth, Texas, where she also volunteered at Alexander Eye Clinic, Cook Children’s Medical Center. She has substantial expertise in pediatric eye care, including non-surgical management of strabismus, amblyopia, and binocular vision disorders. She is proficient in myopia management , ocular disease management, and fitting complex contact lenses.
With over 20 years in eye care, Dr. Kanukuntla provides comprehensive services for patients of all ages. Her practice includes managing dry eye disease, glaucoma, , cataract evaluation, macular degeneration and diabetic eye exams. She offers pre- and postoperative care for cataract and LASIK surgeries and specializes in orthokeratology and fits advanced specialty lenses, such as scleral and rigid gas permeable lenses, for conditions like keratoconus, corneal transplants, and corneal degenerations.
A Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO), Dr. Kanukuntla is actively involved in professional organizations, including the American Academy of Optometry, the Scleral Lens Education Society, and the American Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control.
In addition to her clinical qualifications, Dr. Kanukuntla holds an MBA in Corporate Finance from the University of Dallas and a Master’s in Human Resources. She currently resides in Irving, Texas, with her husband, Sri, and their daughters, Megha and Saanvi. Outside of her practice, she enjoys cooking, listening to music, and spending time with her family.
